UWSAG talks to Denny Lancaster
of Talking Hands Awards

Owner: Talking Hands Awards rated A with UWSAG
Winner: UWSAG Award Seekers Pick! for October, 2003

  1. What got you started in website design?

Talking Hands Awards "Early in 1994 after the death of my wife’s mother died after a ten year battle with Alzheimer disease, we wanted to leave our children and others with the trials and tribulations as care givers for Gladys and her two sisters and brother, who also had AD which was determined at autopsy, so this experience was our first web building experience at Beverly Hills Internet, which later became GeoCities, now Yahoo."

  2. What do you hope to accomplish with your award program?

"Awareness to the frailties of web design which hinder the access by those who suffer from disabilities such as dim eye sight, poor eye and hand coordination, and other limitations in daily activity."

  3. What advice would you give new program owners?

"Start your design and code building on a solid foundation of being WDG and “Bobby” equivalent compliant and by all means use CSS."

  4. What was the biggest problem you faced with your award program?

"Retrofitting a rather large web site to be compliant with WDG and section 508."

  5. If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?

"Build each page to be “compliant” in every respect before publishing on the WWW."

  6. What plans do you have for the future?

"As we near retirement at age 67, we are laying a solid foundation to expand our efforts in building and furnishing “free” assistive devices to those in need throughout the state of Alabama."

  7. What else do you like to do?

"When the weather starts to become more suitable for extended out of door training for agility in about September, we fine tune our handling skills with our wonderful family of six Shetland Sheep dogs and go on the “circuit” which usually lasts until about March of each year. Until retirement the portion that extends into tax season can not be enjoyed by myself but my wife and daughters continue the fun and joy."
